Barbour 4x4 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

 

Whilst we try to answer all emailed questions, we have a policy of not replying to the obvious. Moreover we do not send out sensitive or specific technical information which could compromise our business (unless previously agreed).

Over the years hundreds of enquiries have come in, which in most cases amount to nothing. In order to avoid wasting everyones valuable time, please think your questions through before emailing us.

Thank you for your understanding in this.

Excluding holidays we try to reply to enquiries within three days, although events and the summer period do get in the way sometimes!

 

IS THE BARBOUR 4x4 KIT HOMOLOGATED?

No. However in the UK registration is generally not a problem for the 4x4 kit so long as it is fitted to a 2CV already registered in the UK.

It is the customer’s responsibility to register the vehicle and comply with local regulations.

 

WHERE AND HOW CAN I BUY A BARBOUR 4x4?

Most Barbour products are in stock in Belgium with our European dealer Pierre Focant.

Usually parts are 'off the shelf' except for the chassis', which are built in batches.

Chassis delivery can take from 2 weeks to 4 months depending on our build dates.

Ordering a kit is normally done on a one to one basis. We will give you a compete list of parts we supply and a full written quotation.

We would require a 25% deposit to proceed with the order.

Generally delivery dates are agreed on order but can range from 3 to 6 months

 

IS THE VEHICLE NORMALLY DRIVEN IN TWO WHEEL DRIVE (4x2) ON THE ROAD?

Yes. Normally 4x4 is only engaged for off road, snow or sandy conditions. Maximum speed in 4x4 is approximately 50 Kph. On the road the prop shaft does not spin until the 4x4 system is engaged.

 

WHAT TYPE OF GEARBOX IS FITTED TO THE KIT?

Generally we use either 2cv4 or a Hybrid (mix of 2cv6 and Dyane 6) type gearbox. This is done so that the gears are lower than normal and more suitable for off road.

 

WHAT TYRES ARE RECOMMENDED?

Normally we recommend 135 x 15 or 155 x 15 Mud and Snow tyres.

 

DO YOU FIT CITROEN VISA ENGINES TO YOUR KITS?

No not generally. (Although we have done in the past)

Visa engines have several issues that make them potentially less reliable in 2CV 4x4.

The coating on the aluminium barrels does not enjoy water / liquid mud immersion and quickly deteriorates in dusty situations if the air filter becomes blocked or saturated.

The traditional 2 sensor ignition system is not known for its reliability. Added to this, the extra wiring and the need to keep the Brain totally dry, make this a bit of a messy fit requiring a lot of attention to keep it 100% reliable.

Moreover there are not a lot of suitable donor engines available in good condition.

In our experience a good standard 9:1 compression Dyane engine is the best.

However if you would like a reliable more powerful fully tested engine we reommend Filip van Gool of VGS www.VGS2cv.be

Filip has years of race and raid engine experience and in our opinion builds the best engines available to 2CV drivers today.

 

CAN YOU FIT A GS ENGINE TO A 2CV 4x4?

No .This engine is too powerful and will quickly damage the gearbox. In addition to this it is too heavy and very exposed to water ingestion.

 

DO YOU NEED QUAIFE LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIALS?

No. Over 50% of our kits have been supplied with normal 2CV Diffs.

Cars have been tested on Raids etc for tens of thousand of miles with normal diffs without failure. Raid Austraila, Raid Nord cap and ventures to Kazakhstan, to name a few.

The Quaife unit is very strong and works very well in both the front and rear and if you intend to go more seriously off road, you should consider a Quaife as its strength and partial lock up ability will enhance the off road potential. Moreover in several off road conditions we have broken several standard diff units resulting in catastrophic damage to the main gearbox and also the rear diff.

 

CAN YOU FIT A QUAIFE LIMITED SLIP DIFF IN THE FRONT GEARBOX OF A STANDARD ROAD CAR?

Yes. This has been done several times. It improves traction on loose surfaces thereby reducing fatigue in the gearbox and making the whole setup a more reliable component.

A lot of Raid cars now have a Quaife fitted as standard.

 

WHAT DAMPERS DO YOU RECOMMEND?

We always use standard Lip or Boge.

We do not recommend any other damper, as Llip and Boge are an original fit and have proved themselves time and time again.

 

HOW LONG WOULD IT TAKE TO PUT A KIT TOGETHER?

Assuming that you have fair mechanical skills, generally no kit should take longer than 3 months to build from start to finish.

However this very much depends on the condition of the donor parts /body shell.

Welding and preparation of the body shell should take no longer than 4 weeks.

Allow 2 weeks to fit the rolling chassis to a prepared shell.

Allow a further 2 weeks to finish all the small items.

 

DO YOU SELL USED 4x4?

No. Very few 2CV 4X4 come up for sale. Best advice is to keep an eye on this site and if used vehicles become available they will be listed on the web site, with their owner’s info etc.

 

DO YOU ENGINEER OTHER PROJECTS?

Yes. We frequently work on other projects and designs..

We also sell separate drive line components, so you can build your own 4x4 project to your own ideas, and using your own chassis / base vehicle.

An exciting project for Barbour 4x4 is working closely with Peter Sparrow of Sparrow Automotive in the design and commercialization of parts for fitting the BMW Boxer engine into 2CV's

In 2015 we will continue the development of a bespoke rear differential unit for the Barbour 4x4 based on the internals of the GSA/Visa gearbox series.

This uint will be available with an original Citroen diff unit or with a Quaife LSD including a full lock option. Diff Ratio 8/33

It will be manufactured with a possibility of several versions.

Stand alone rear diff unit for all A series cars with in-board disc brakes.

Direct replacement for Mehari 4x4 rear diff.

Adaptable diff unit for other kit cars with power up to 65KW

Also in 2015 we will start deliveries of direct replacement chassis for Katar 4x4, Voisin 4x4, raid vehicles and AK 400 vans.
